Abandoned Vehicles in Manitoba: What Property Owners Can Do

Abandoned SUV with Chains

A vehicle can look abandoned without being legally available to sell. It may belong to a tenant, former occupant, customer, lender or estate. Before calling a recycler, separate a vehicle you own from one that merely sits on property you control.

If the vehicle is yours

Confirm that the MPI record and VIN identify you as the legal owner. Gather the registration card or ask an Autopac agent about an Ownership Document if it is unregistered. Then document its condition and access and request a quote. The ownership-papers guide explains the ordinary starting point.

If someone else left it behind

Possession of the land, keys or an old bill of sale does not automatically prove authority to dispose of another person's vehicle. Keep records showing when it appeared, any contact attempts and any lease or property documents. Ask the municipality, property manager, police non-emergency line or a lawyer which process applies before moving or selling it.

Do not sign the owner's name, remove identifying numbers or present yourself as the owner. Twin Rivers Auto Recycling cannot turn an unresolved abandoned-property question into a valid sale.

Municipal rules are not one province-wide deadline

Manitoba municipalities can have different property standards, nuisance bylaws, notice periods and enforcement steps. A notice from Winnipeg may not use the same process as a rural municipality. Read the notice itself and contact the office that issued it. Avoid articles that promise a universal 14-day or 30-day rule without naming the exact bylaw.

Public-road and safety issues need the right authority

A vehicle blocking a public road, creating an immediate danger or appearing stolen is not an ordinary private pickup. Use the local police non-emergency channel or emergency services when safety requires it. The current Manitoba Highway Traffic Act is the official provincial road-law text; municipal property enforcement is separate.

What to document while authority is resolved

  • Photograph the vehicle, plate and VIN only from a lawful, safe position.
  • Record where it is and whether it blocks an entrance or public route.
  • Keep notices and communication with the apparent owner.
  • Do not enter, strip or move the vehicle unless authorized.

When Twin Rivers Auto Recycling can help

Once the legal owner or authorized authority can approve the sale, Twin Rivers Auto Recycling can assess the vehicle and pickup location. Use the quote form for a vehicle you are entitled to sell.
