Lost Vehicle Ownership Papers in Manitoba: What to Do Next
By Twin Rivers Auto Recycling · 26 August 2026 · 70 views
Losing the registration card is common with a vehicle that has been parked for years. It does not mean the vehicle has no owner, and it does not automatically prevent a future sale. The safe path is to confirm the MPI record and obtain the document that fits the vehicle's situation.
Record the VIN before making calls
Find the vehicle identification number on paperwork or on a safe, visible part of the vehicle, often at the base of the windshield or door area. Photograph it rather than copying from memory. Also note the licence plate, year, make and model. If numbers disagree, stop and ask MPI to resolve the record.
Ask MPI which replacement applies
For a currently registered vehicle, an Autopac agent can explain replacement registration options. For an unregistered vehicle, MPI says an Ownership Document can be provided on request. The official Ownership transfers page is the starting point, but an agent must apply the rule to your record.
Bring government identification and any older registration, insurance, purchase or financing records you still have. These may help identify the file; they do not let a seller invent or sign another owner's authorization.
Do not solve the problem with a blank signature
If the registered or legal owner is someone else, contact that person or the authorized representative. If the owner has died, use MPI's death-related transfer process. If the vehicle came with property you purchased, ask what proof connects that sale to the vehicle. Never backdate a bill of sale or sign a name that is not yours.
Check for status and financial interests
Missing paper can hide a second issue. MPI recommends confirming the legal owner and checking for liens when buying or selling a vehicle. Its buyer and seller protection page explains the distinction and points to Teranet Manitoba for lien searches.
You can prepare the pickup details while you wait
Photograph the whole vehicle, wheels and route to the road. Note whether it starts, rolls, steers and has keys. Remove personal belongings. Those facts let Twin Rivers Auto Recycling discuss a possible quote without pretending the ownership transfer is complete.
Once MPI or the Autopac agent confirms the acceptable documents, return to the guide on ownership papers for scrap cars and then submit the quote request. The goal is a clean record and an accurate pickup plan, not a shortcut around either one.
