Selling a Vehicle from an Estate in Manitoba: A Practical Checklist
By Twin Rivers Auto Recycling · 22 August 2026 · 75 views
An estate vehicle is different from an ordinary private sale because the registered owner has died. The practical first step is not a scrap quote. It is confirming who has authority to dispose of the vehicle and which documents MPI requires for that estate situation.
Confirm who may act for the estate
An executor, administrator or other legally authorized disposer may be able to complete the sale, depending on the will and court documents. A relative who has the keys or stores the vehicle is not automatically authorized to sell it. Twin Rivers Auto Recycling can assess the vehicle and pickup, but cannot decide who has legal authority.
MPI's Ownership transfers page lists separate requirements for a probated will, an unprobated will, no will, letters of administration and joint ownership. Check the matching situation with an Autopac agent before arranging removal.
Build one document folder
MPI says death-related transfers require a Transfer of Ownership Document plus supporting proof that varies by circumstance. Examples on its current page include a death certificate, a certified will, Letters Probate, Letters of Administration or a Statutory Declaration and Indemnification Agreement. When an estate sells to a third party, MPI also calls for a bill of sale signed by the executor or disposer.
- Keep the registration card or other ownership record with the file.
- Record the VIN from a safe, visible location on the vehicle or paperwork.
- Keep copies of the estate authority and death-related documents.
- Ask the Autopac agent which originals or certified copies must be presented.
Check the vehicle before asking for pickup
Once authority is clear, collect the operational details: year, make, model, keys, wheel condition and whether it rolls or steers. Photograph the vehicle and its route to the road. Estate vehicles often sit in garages, farmyards or properties being cleared, so identify locked gates, stored belongings and anything blocking access.
Remove personal papers and estate belongings from the cabin and trunk. Do not dispose of licence plates as part of the vehicle; MPI's selling guidance says the seller retains them after a private sale.
Keep the quote separate from the legal transfer
Twin Rivers Auto Recycling can discuss condition, value and pickup before every estate document is complete. The actual purchase must wait until the person signing has authority and acceptable ownership proof. That separation lets the estate gather information without creating a false promise that the vehicle can already be sold.
Use a short estate-sale checklist
- Identify the executor, administrator or authorized disposer.
- Confirm the exact MPI document list with an Autopac agent.
- Check whether a lender or another party has an interest in the vehicle.
- Gather vehicle photos, condition and property-access details.
- Request a Twin Rivers Auto Recycling quote only with accurate information.
When those pieces are ready, use the Twin Rivers Auto Recycling quote form or call the number shown on this site. For a separate paperwork overview, read the guide to ownership papers in Manitoba.
