Selling a Vehicle With a Lien in Manitoba: What to Check First

White Car on Trailer in Snow

A lien means another party may have a registered financial interest in the vehicle. Its low value, age or poor condition does not make that interest disappear. Before accepting payment or arranging pickup, identify the legal owner and find out whether a lien remains against the VIN.

Why a scrap sale does not clear a lien

The vehicle may secure an unpaid loan or another obligation. Selling it to a recycler changes possession; it does not automatically release the secured party's claim. Twin Rivers Auto Recycling cannot cancel a lien, decide the balance or sign a release for the lender.

Search the VIN before relying on memory

MPI's buying and selling guidance tells buyers and sellers to check for liens and points to the Property Registry operated by Teranet Manitoba. Use the VIN from the vehicle and ownership record. A paid-off loan is not the same as a discharged registration, so keep written confirmation.

Speak directly with the lienholder

If a search finds an interest, contact the named lender or creditor using trusted contact information. Ask for the amount or action required and what written release will be provided. Do not send money or documents based only on contact information supplied in an unsolicited message.

The lender may require full payment, may provide another arrangement, or may say its registration has already been discharged. Those are decisions between the owner and lienholder. Twin Rivers Auto Recycling can discuss a vehicle quote but should not be presented as the party resolving the debt.

Keep ownership documents consistent

The seller must still be entitled to transfer the vehicle. Compare the legal owner information, VIN and any release document before signing a bill of sale or TOD. MPI's Ownership transfers page explains the normal transfer document and exceptions.

Prepare for a quote while the release is pending

You can collect photos, keys, condition and access details while waiting. State clearly that a lien is being resolved. Do not schedule a final handoff until the lienholder and MPI or an Autopac agent have confirmed what is required.

  • Record the VIN accurately.
  • Keep the search result and release correspondence together.
  • Remove personal items, not parts needed to identify the vehicle.
  • Tell Twin Rivers Auto Recycling whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has all wheels.

Complete the sale only after the record is clear

Once the legal owner and financial interest are settled, use the Twin Rivers Auto Recycling quote form or call the number shown on this site. If the ownership card itself is missing, follow the separate lost-paperwork guide before pickup.
